The regiment, a mere two weeks after war was declared, established its own training for those volunteering for overseas duty. Training moved to the Horse Palace at the Canadian National Exhibition grounds on 7 October 1939 with 52 Officers enrolled, some to conduct the training of Highlanders who had stepped forward in the 1st week of September and new recruits. others to go overseas at a later date. Training was named “Maybin’s Academy” after Major William Maybin, MC who had served with the 15th Battalion, 48th Highlanders during the First World War. Classes were held 3 nights a week. After the 1st Battalion went overseas in December 1939, the Department of Defence confirmed the 2nd Battalion, 48th Highlanders to continue the regiment in Toronto and be part of the training for officers and Highlanders ongoing.
