L/Cpl UTTLEY, John

436899 John Uttley 32 year old cook originally from Todmorden, Yorkshire when he attested into the  51st Battalion in Edmonton AB in February 1915.  He was sent to the 15th Battalion from the UK in a reinforcement draft in June 1916 and assigned initially to the Grenade (Bombing) Section. He was reported Missing in Action on the Somme in October but later reported safe. He was moved to  No. 4 Company in January 1917 and served at Vimy in April and Hill 70 in August.

Private Uttley was overcome by coke gas in a mine sap and admitted ill to 3rd Canadian Field Ambulance in September 1917. He was evacuated to the UK where he was declared medically unfit for further service and repatriated to Canada and discharged in Edmonton. Private Utterly died of a ‘service related’ injury on May 26, 1919 and is buried in Edmonton Cemetery
