Dumais, Pte Fernando J. – 1st Bn

B145768 Pte Dumais,  Fernando J. was transferred from the 48th Highlanders X-4 list (the list of soldiers who were held in reserve, often still in England, to be called up as reinforcements when there were vacancies in the battalion due to casualties or transfers to other units. The date he joined the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders in Italy was 25 May 1944. The battalion had just completed the successful breaching of the Hitler Line, near Pontecorvo, about 80 km south of Rome. He would have joined the battalion when they were at rest at Piedmonte d’Alife recovering from the battle. We don’t see him on the sailing list in March 1945, when the battalion left Italy to go to be part of the final liberation of Holland, so he must have left the battalion at some point in the Italian campaign.
