Regimental Sergeant Major, 48th Highlanders of Canada (2024 – present)
Matthew French joined the Canadian Forces on 05 May 1992. While with his first unit, the Governor General’s Horse Guards, he completed all levels of armoured reconnaissance and cavalry training available on reserve platforms. He has filled all key positions within an armoured fighting squadron.
He has deployed domestically on OP LENTUS for the snow removal assistance in Toronto in 1999 and OP Globe as the operations warrant for the repatriation of Canadians stranded abroad in 2020.
He was appointed to Master Corporal (MCpl) in August 1999 as the first step in career advancement. In May 2019 he was promoted to Master Warrant Officer (MWO) having filled the role of both Squadron Sergeants Major. In April 2021, he transferred to the Queen’s York Rangers to fill the role of Drill Sergeant Major. In October 2021 he was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) and appointed as Regimental Sergeant Major just prior to the unit receiving it’s current Guidon from the Governor General.
Matthew assumed the appointment of Regimental Sergeant Major on 15 April 2024.
In June 2024 he was invested as a Member of The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem.
