Frank Herbert Campbell North, a member of the 48th Highlanders since 1910, enlisted with the 134th Battalion (48th Highlanders) on 16 Jan 1916 to serve oversea and was transferred to the 15th Battalion (48th Highlanders). He continued with the 48th Highlanders after the war. In 1930 he was promoted to Company Sergeant Major and was awarded the Long Service Medal (20 years service) in the spring of 1931 and Coronation Medal (King George VI) in 1937. On 6 September 1939, just days after war was declared, CSM North enlisted for overseas service and was assigned to a team of experienced veterans to oversee and begin the training of the intake of new recruits, looking for promising NCO material. On 15 September he joined the newly formed 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders of Canada. As CSM of D Company, North departed from Toronto on 17 December with the 1st Battalion, embarked in Halifax on the Reina del Pacifico on the 18th with the convoy bound for England. In early 1942 he temporarily took over as Regimental Sergeant Major when RSM Frank Jamieson was wounded during training. In June 1943 he remained in England when the battalion embarked for the landings at Pachino, Sicily on 10 July. (research req’d for balance of WW2).
After the war, CSM North became a member of the Old Comrades Association (renamed in 1947 from the 15th Bn OCA) and its President in 1948. When, in June 1949, the Regiment formed a broader association (The 48th Highlanders Association) to encompass the Regiment, the Old Comrades, the 48th Chapter IODE, the Ladies Auxiliary and the Officers Association he was elected to the Board of Directors as one of 4 to represent the OCA.
