Military Medal (MM)

On 22 May 1944 while attacking the ADOLF HITLER LINE two platoons off “A”Coy, 48th Highlanders of Canada, were pinned to the ground by heavy machine gun, mortar and sniper fire.  The reserve platoon was then ordered to make a left flanking move on the enemy’s positions in order to relieve the pressure on the two forward platoons and permit them to move on to their objective.  Due to casualties, A-4000 Cpl Richard Aloysis RILEY became senior non-commissioned officer in the reserve platoon and took over command.  He carried out this left flanking movement with such valour and determination that he was able to clear three houses of machine gunners and snipers who were holding up the company.  Then he pushed on up the hill which was the company’s objective with two of his sections.  Twice they were driven off this feature, but this non-commissioned officer aggressively attacked again and the enemy fell back.

Through Cpl RILEY’s aggressive action and fearless leadership, his platoon forced the enemy to withdraw from the hill and permitted the company to move forward on its objective.
