Pte COMBER, Albert Henry

Private Albert Henry Comber 24 year old farm labourer originally from Staplefield, England and living in Berkley, Ontario when he attested into the 15th Battalion at Valcartier in September 1914. He was a member of the contingent from the 31st Grey Regiment of the Militia which joined the contingent from the 48th Highlanders to create the original establishment of the 15th Battalion. He was assigned to D Company when the battalion was at Larkhill camp, Salisbury Plain in the UK. He was on New Year’s leave visiting his brother-in-law when he came seriously ill with pneumonia – likely contracted during the wet stay on Salisbury plain – and died in hospital on January 7, 1915. Private Comber is buried in Deptford (Brockley) Cemetery and is also commemorated on the war memorial in Markdale, Ontario
