Capt Edward Mack Childs

Captain Edward Mack “Ted” Childs was born on 20 January 1914 in Woodstock, Ontario. He enlisted on 26 September 1940 in Stratford, Ontario and was transferred to the Highland Light Infantry after his basic training.  In England he was still part of the HLI and was transferred to the 48th Highlanders in May 1943.

Ted landed on the shores of Sicily between Pachino and Ispica on 10 July 1943 and took part in Operation Husky. He was with the 48th Highlanders during the Italian Campaign although he was hospitalized a few times because of jaundice and malaria. Ted was the Quartermaster from HQ Company of the 48th Highlanders.

On 27 February 1945 he was shipped to France arriving on 2 March 1945 and was part of Headquarters of 1st Canadian Corps. On 6 March 1945 he was seriously wounded in a road accident in the area of Ghent, Belgium and was rushed to a hospital. He succumbed of his wounds the same day and was initially buried in Ghent and later reburied at Adegem Canadian War Cemetery.

NOK: Ted was married to Helen Beatrice and together they had two daughters, Berkeley and Denise. His wife and daughters lived in New Toronto, Ontario. Son of Robert Edward and Effie May Childs.
