In March 1944 Lieutenant David Vaughn Roland, an officer of The Royal Canadian Corps of Signals, was taken on strength of the 48th Highlanders of Canada as the Unit Signals Officer. Since that time he has served continuously with the Battalion both in and out of action.

On many occasions under fire he displayed courage of the highest quality.  During the recent attack of the 48th Highlanders across the LAMONE RIVER, line communication between Tactical Headquarters and the forward companies was frequently cut by shell fire, and by enemy patrols.  On at least six occasions on one day, Lieutenant Roland led a line party out to repair signal cables in the face of  intense  and continuing enemy shell, mortar and small arms fire. It was entirely due to his tireless efforts and courageou example that signals communications were maintained.  As there was constant danger from enemy counter-attack his actions contributed in large measure to the successful bridgehead across the LAMONE River.

At all times Lieutenant Roland has carried out his duties in a most exemplary and efficient manner.  Although not actually a member of the 48th Highlanders, he has always given the battalion his loyal and devoted support, at times far beyond the requirements of duty.  In training areas for instance, he has, by tireless and unremitting effort, maintained the efficiency of the Signal Platoon at a very high level and set an example of efficiency for all ranks.  In action, largely as a result of his personal example and fearless leadership, his platoon has alway provided those communications which are vitally essential to the success of any operation.
