Brown, Piper George Macrae

George Macrae Brown served as a piper in the 48th Highlanders Pipes and Drums. He enrolled on 1 August 1943 in the 2nd Battalion (the home battalion in Toronto during the war) and was given the service number B486572. He remained with the pipe band until  20 May 1948. During that time the pipe band was led by Pipe Major James Fraser who had come from the Gordon Highlanders in Aberdeenshire to become Pipe Major in May 1913. He retired in 1952. During WWII the pipe band was a source of pipers for overseas duty and in Toronto paraded and played throughout the Toronto and Ontario area as their high profile was an important element of recruiting for the army.

Piper Brown died in 1978.
