Pte Birinyi, Alexander, service number B105128 enlisted at No. 23 T.C. (Reserve Recruits) either from or to a reserve unit.
The entries in 48th Highlanders orders of July 1944 show:
. Struck off Strength X-3 List to 48th Highrs on 14 July 44 and the unit registered him on strength on the 15 July. The x-3 list designates “All ranks evacuated on medical grounds behind Regimental Aid Posts”. They could be either wounded or sick enough to leave the unit. That indicates that he was with the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders on the 15th of July and may have been with the unit prior to being sent to the X-3 List (medical). He joined the 48th at the age of 17.
. On 18 July he was Struck off Strength of the 48th Highlanders to the X-3 list 48th Highrs who received him the next day. This suggests he fell ill again three days after returning to the 1st Battalion.
The battalion was at rest in June, July and early August, at Piedmonte d’Alife. The battle proceeding this was 22/23 May when the battalion broke the Hitler Line, south of Pontecorvo. Net, we know he was with the 48th Highlanders, 1st Battalion in Italy in the summer of 1944. Also, he was in the medical stream before and after mid July. (more research required)
