Two signalers splicing wire – Piedemonte, Italy 1944

Never a Dull Moment in Italy

Even when they are not fighting the Hun, Canadian units in Italy hold competitions in their respective branches of service to make them more efficient in the battles to come. Picture shows splicing by two members of the Signal Section of the 48th Highlanders. They are left to right: Pte. F.E. Vincent, Montreal, and Pte. R.G. Underwood, Kitchener, Ont.  (Canadian Army Overseas Photo)   P0527

The 48th Highlanders were at rest at Piedmonte d’Alife in June and July 1943 after their successful, single-handed breaching of the Hitler Line at Pontecorvo on 22 and 23 May 1943. It was the first breaching of the Hitler Line by any Canadian troops.
