Troops with mule at Reggio di Calabria, Italy. September 1943

Troops with mule, Reggio di Calabria Italy – Sept 1943

Members of the 1wt Battalion, 48th Highlanders, with mule at Reggio di Calabria, Italy, Sept 1943. The 48th Highlanders with the 1st Cdn Division had landed at Reggio across the Straits of Messina on 3 September 1943. They quickly found that the Germans, under General Kesselring, were retreating to better defensive positions further up Italy. The Germans took advantage of the many gullies in the toe of Italy, blowing every bridge as they departed in order to slow the Canadian advance. Mules became an essential part of maintaining supplies. P605
