Shell Casings from a 1″ Nordenfeld Gun

The 1″ Nordenfeld was a naval gun used in the 1880s, generally, as a tertiary weapon to defend a larger vessel against attack by high speed motor torpedo boats. By the start of the South African war, it was regarded as obsolete, however a number of these weapons were pressed into service by both British forces and the Boers to protect armoured trains.

Note: These two shell casings were previously accessioned as 999.38.1.
