date of death 16 December 1944; North of the Lamone River while the regiment was expanding and broadening its beachhead from the succesful night crossing of the Lamone on the 10th. In the assault to capture Casa Baschi, Lt Smith’s platoon was reassigned from Baker Company to assist Charlie company’s attack. During shelling and severe counterattacks by German infantry Lt. Smith was killed just before the Germans withdrew.
