RSM Montgomery served overseas with the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders of Canada, in Sicily, Italy and Holland. He was a Platoon Sergeant in Able Company and promoted to Company Sergeant Major in early October, 1944 following the action at the Rimini Line. Montgomery,  as a Sergeant in Able Company,  was awarded the Military Medal (MM) in the Gothic Line leading up to the final assault on the Rimini Line.
