Reinforcement draft to 1st Battalion – 1 May 1945

Black and white photo in original cardboard shipping tube. Photo is of the Reinforcing Draft of ORs (other ranks) to the 1st Battalion 48th Highlanders in Holland on 1 May 1945. B166052 Pte Reichelt, Albert Joseph is in the rear rank, 2nd on the right. In the front row centre are two 48th Officers in kilt, the one to the left holding an ash plant (Walking stick) is Major Michael E. George.

Pte Reichelt of Stevensville, Ontario enlisted in Hamilton in 1944 when he turned 18. He arrived in the UK in the spring of 1945 and was part of the 1 May 1945 reinforcing draft for the 1st Battalion 48th Highlanders in Holland. In June, Reichelt was posted to the 4th Battalion Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada for the Canadian Occupation forces in Germany. He died in a collision of his jeep with a civilian milk truck in Germany in 1946.

At this time of the photo the 48th were out of battle for the balance of the war following their liberation of Apeldoorn and an agreement between the Canadians and Germans that the Canadians would stop their advance in Holland with the Germans, in return, allowing food to be delivered to the starving Dutch population.
