Canadian Silver Cross sent to Tweddle’s next of kin after his death. Pte Tweddle was killed in action on 30 January 1944 after the successful outflanking of Ortona by the 48th Highlanders in December 1943. The battalion was in the Arielli River area, in a defensive position conducting aggressive patrols into the German lines to determine their positions and strength.
The Memorial Silver Cross was issued post 1919 and only went to widows and mothers (next of kin) of those who died while in service or after service as a result of service related wounds/illness.
