Watercolour painting of house near Ortona, December 1943 – Mathieson

Watercolour by Pte. D.J. Mathieson, 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders, of a house damaged by shell fire. The drawing is most likely west of Ortona, near San Tommaso at the location occupied by the 48th Highlanders in a daring, night-time sneak penetration 1200 meters behind the German lines with the goal of threatening the only road into and out of Ortona that the Germans could use, thus adding pressure for the Germans to withdraw from the battle in the town.
