Lt and Major looking down the road – Sicily, July 1943

Canadians in Sicily

Lieut. J.M.E. Clarkson, left, and Major Donald W. Banton, both of Toronto, look smilingly down the road towards Regalbuto from Advance Battalion Headquarters of the 48th Highlanders. (Likely 30 July 1943) Major Banton’s company was in the thick of the fighting around Valguarnera, which men of the 48th called “Valcartier”. He referred to the fighting there as “their first dust-up.”   P1461
