LCol James Counsel assumed command of the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders of Canada in The Netherlands  after the battlefield death of LCol Donald Mackenzie at Wilp, following the crossing of the Ijssel River as part of Operation Cannonshot and the liberation of  Apeldoorn. LCol Counsel brought the battalion home to Toronto in October 1945.
