LCol. D.M. Robertson – Metal Chest

A large black metal trunk used by former Commanding Officer and former Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel of the 48th Highlanders, LCol. Donald Murdoch Robertson. On the chest’s lid has embossed cursive text reading: “Major D. M. Robertson     48th Highlanders   Toronto”. The lid is attached to the box on one side by two metal hinges and has a lock on the front. On each side of the chest is a hinged carrying handle. On the inside are two fabric straps attached to the lid and the lower part for support. Parts of a fabric liner remain on the inside of the edges of the lid. A small metal key is stored with it for the lock on the front of the trunk.

Lock top has stamped: “A & N.C.S. LTD   PATNT   NO. 6682″ (Army & Navy Cooperative Society/Store)

More reading on the A & N.C.S. here: https://housefraserarchive.ac.uk/company/?id=c0512 . The company did not have any stores in Canada, and so was likely purchased from the UK.

Lock bottom has stamped: “FOUR LEVER LOCK   J. HODGES   MAKER”. James Hodges was a lock maker in Wolverhampton, UK, existing from 1860-1979.
