Charlie Stock and Spicer with billets in Wellingborough, around June 1 1941.

In private billets, Wellingboro, UK – June 1941

Two 48th Highlanders with couple, owners of the home in which Spicer and Charlie Stock  billeted in Wellingboro on June 1,2 1941. The battalion had left Aldershot on 30 May by train for the Dover coast as part of a plan to be sent to France to aid the Allied armies being pushed back in the Dunkerque area. The battalion was diverted from Dover back inland to Wellingboro when the original plan was discarded. They nicknamed the event “The Dover Dash.” The battalion would go to France as part of the 1st Canadian Division, after the evacuation at Dunkerque had been completed. They sailed on the SS El Monsour on 13 June, penetrated 300 km into France to Sable sur Sarthe before being ordered to return to England, which they did by commandeering their train at gunpoint and travelling to St Malo then back to England.
