Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II opens Regimental Museum – 29 June 1997

Her Majesty inquires about a medals display in the Regimental Museum during opening ceremony and visit. His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh watches while Major Geordie Beal, CD, Chair of the 48th Highlanders Museum and Brigadier General Peter Cameron, OMM, CStJ, CD, Honourary Colonel, consider their response. The framed photograph on the extreme left was presented in 1947 to commemorate the acceptance by Her Royal Highness, Princess Elizabeth of the appointment as the first Colonel-in-Chief of the 48th Highlanders of Canada. The 48th Highlanders were one of three regiments for whom Her Majesty accepted the appointment as Colonel-in-Chief, the first such appointments accepted. Her Majesty was Colonel-in-Chief of the 48th Highlanders for 75 years, five years longer than she was Queen.

Coincidentally the opening of the museum in 1997 marked the 50th anniversary of Her Majesty’s appointment.

Behind the Queen is the Vimy Cross of the 15th Battalion, removed from the battlefield and sent to the regiment in 1923.
