Photo of grave stone for B81581 Pte B.C. Gunter, 48th Highlanders of Canada, Age 27, KIA 12th April 1945. On 12 April, the 48th Highlanders crossed the Ijssel River near the town of Wilp in Holland as the first phase of Operation Cannonshot, the liberation of Apeldoorn. Nineteen Highlanders were killed in this operation including LCol Donald Mackenzie, the commanding officer and his driver, Pte Gunter. The battlefield graves were on the dyke at Wilp and after the war were moved to a permanent cemetery in Holten. P1110
