Major Don Banton with 3 Italians

Major Don Banton speaking with 3 Italian soldiers in front of a ruined building in Sicily. The Italian soldiers and local Guardia, with the exception of a strongly fascist group called the Blackshirts,  had decided not to fight as the Allies crossed Sicily, leaving the defence to the Germans. On 26 July, 1943 near the end of the Sicilian campaign, the BBC announced the fall of Mussolini.
