A black and white 60 inch (152.4 cm) by 10 inch (25.4 cm) portrait of the 134th Highlanders “D” Company taken on March 19th 1916.
The 134th (48th Highlanders) Battalion, CEF was a unit in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War I and was to be a fighting unit as the army had decided they needed a 5th Canadian Division. The unit began recruiting in late 1915 in that city. After sailing to England in August 1916, the battalion trained for their role and two companies reinforced the 15th Battalion (48th Highalnders). When the army decided not to form a 5th Division the 134th Battalion was demobilized on 12 February 1918 and the men sent to a variety of units and services including the 12th Reserve Battalion on March 7, 1918. The 134th (48th Highlanders) Battalion, CEF, first Commanding Officer was LCol D. Donald, VD, however when he fell ill in July 1916 his successor was LCol Armour A Miller. LCol Miller was killed in action late in the war as the CO of the 19th Battalion.
