Tom Slater joined the 48th Highlanders Cadets  1971-73, joined the 48th Highlanders of Canada reserve battalion 1973-75 and returned to the unit 1977-1998. In the Cadets, he attended the Junior Leadership Course at Ipperwash Cadet Camp and a rifle course.
