Capt Wallace having a drink – Sicily

Canadians in Sicily

Captain Ian S. Wallace, Toronto, of the 48th Highlanders of Canada exercises his right arm by lifting a large earthenware jug for a drink of water. The 48th had moved into an olive grove after they were withdrawn for a rest at the completion of the Sicilian battles in the first week of August 1943.  The olive grove, near Carcaci on the Simeto River, was described by the soldiers as a Garden of Eden after the blistering 40C weather in which they had founght through Sicily. Unfortunately the Garden of Eden was home to the malaria bearing mosquito, forcing the battalion to relocate to the arid plain at Militello. P1473
