Brig. W.C. Macdonald’s Binoculars

Brigadier William Campbell Macdonald’s binoculars, from the Carl Zeiss company, purchased through the J. H. Steward company. The binoculars are black with a brown leather strap. Painted on the back side prism lids are text reading: “CARL ZEISS   JENA” on the left side and “SILVAREM   356302   6X” on the right side. Painted on the front side prism lids are text reading: “AGENT J.H.STEWARD LONDON” on the left side and “COLONEL W.C.MACDONALD. 127. ST GEORGES ST TORONTO.” on the right side. The Carl Zeiss company are renowned makers of a wide variety optical devices globally, especially microscopes and binoculars, and are located in Jena, Germany, while J. H. Steward company are also renowned makers of optical devices in the UK and located in London, UK, particularly being appointed in the 19th century to make optical devices for the British and British Colonial armed forces. This set of binoculars are a Silvarem 6x model with a serial number of 356302, which dates the device to likely the summer of 1913 when devices first reached serial number 350000. J. H. Steward was the selling agent of Carl Zeiss products in the UK.

Binocular stored in a brown hard leather case specially made in slightly curved shape matching binoculars, black leather on the inside, a number of leather straps around the case for carrying, and 3 grey metal studs on front and sides for attaching carrying straps. Etched on top of lid of case are initials in black: “W.C.M.”
