LCol Ian Johnston being presented with a “Gong” in Italy 1943 P1425 The medal is the Distinguished Service Order, awarded for the Operation Morning Glory, on the advance to Ortona in December 1943.  Our regimental history Dileas states: “Colonel Johnston stated in an address to Able Company: ” This unit has been awarded the DSO for its part in the recent fighting between the Moro River and Ortona. As the Officer Commanding this unit, I will be the person privileged to wear it, and I will do so with great pride in my association with the body of men whose deeds have won the award.” Able Company politely listened, but with the rest of the unit still declared it was Blinky’s DSO.”
