In Sicily the battalion after the Sicilian campaign was give a camp spot at the Simeto River. It was a lush area but home to the malaria mosquito. The battalion moved to Militello to escape the mosquitos but too late for many. At a meeting of the senior officers of the 1st Canadian Division in Sicily the 48th Highlanders Medical Officer spoke up, insisting that mepacrine tablets be issued to all.
