Church Parade in Piedmonte, Italy 1944

48th Church Parade Piedmonte, Bn singing a hymn – 1944

Bn Singing a hymn at Piedmonte d’Alife at Church Parade.  The battalion was at rest following their successful breaching of the Adolph Hitler Line on 22/23 May 1944. The battalion did it alone, without a FOO for artillery or the promise of tank support. The Division commanders had decided that the 48th Highlanders, single battalion attack would be a “diversion” for the German defenders. The beachhead they created enabled the 1st Brigade to complete the penetration of the Hitler Line at Pontecorvo, several days before a 2 Brigade breaching with full armour and artillery support at the Melo River.P1457
