Dutch citizens pay their respect at Wilp, Holland 1945. P0608. The 1st Battalion held a ceremony on 26 April to honour those Highlanders who died in Operation Cannonshot, the liberation of Apeldoorn, The Netherlands. Nineteen Highlanders, including the Commanding Officer, LCol Donald A, Mackenzie, DSO, DSC,  were buried on the dyke at Wilp, the town nearest the crossing of the Ijssel River in the first phase of the Operation. The cemetery was relocated to the Canadian Military Cemetery at Holten after the war. The Dutch vowed to place flowers on the graves which the Dutch children do to this day.
