Her Majesty Opens 48th Highlanders Museum – 29 June 1997
Plaque Unveiled by Her Majesty at opening of Museum – 29 June 1997

On 29 June 1997 Queen Elizabeth II opened the 48th Highlanders Museum at its new location in St. Andrew’s Church. At precisely 2:40 pm, the Queen arrived to inspect a Guard of Honour, escorted by LCol Ian Cameron and Guard Commander Major Andre Poles. Then, accompanied by the Honorary Colonel, Brigadier General Peter Cameron, OMM, CStJ, CD, Her Majesty toured the museum with Major Geordie Beal, CD, the Chair of the museum, meeting the key members of the Regimental family and their spouses.

The opening marked the 50th anniversary of the acceptance  in 1947 by Her Majesty, then Princess Elizabeth, of the role as Colonel-in-Chief of the 48th Highlanders of Canada, the first such appointment for Princess Elizabeth. Two other regiments were similarly honoured on the same day. Her Majesty’s final words as she was departing were: “You have yet another milestone here in the annals of a proud and famous regiment. Do keep it up. Relatively few of our regiments at home have such impressive links with their past.”
