Pipe-majors were 1st Class staff NCOs and their status allowed them to carry a dirk with knife and fork, although with silver fittings, not gilt like the officers.

Large equipment roll stenciled ” Lieut. JCD Desterre 48th Highlanders. It is 26″ x 50″ heavy cotton. Brown on one side and strips of white cotton on inside. Several straps present to tie up roll.
