Throughout the period of fighting from 17 May to 23 May 1944, B79426 Serjeant Stanley CALDWELL was senior serjeant of the scout platoon of the 48th Highlanders of Canada.  On the 18 May 1944 the platoon officer was taken prisoner and Serjeant CALDWELL took on the responsibility of organizing all of the patrols sent out by the Unit.  On the morning of 19 May 1944 the Battalion took up a position on high ground about one thousand yards in front of the ADOLF HITLER Lin (are MR 73713). The intervening ground was absolutely flat, with no cover, and was under direct enemy observation and capable of being covered over its entire expanse with enemy small arms fire as well as artillery and mortar fire.

Early information with regard to the enemy defences was required and Serjeant CALDWELL was ordered to gain as much information as possible by observation and reconnaissance patrols. Without hesitation this non-commissioned officer with two other scouts crossed the intervening ground in broad daylight and entered the enemy wire.  He returned with complete and accurate details as to the enemy wire and anti tank obstacles and the location of their pillboxes.  This intelligence gained at such grave risk in the very face of the enemy of inestimable value in planning the subsequent attack on the ADOLF HITLER line.
