Attested on 7 July 1917 with the Service Bn CDF, 48th Highlanders CEF for overseas duty. Date of Birth is 4 July 1871 which made him 46 when he attested. Sent to NCO’s Training Depot in Militia District 2 at Niagara on the Lake for training where he was diagnosed with a hernia that required an operation. It surfaced when he was training.  He was given the option of surgery or not and declined. He was returned to the home battalion of the 48th Highlanders. He was discharged 27 April 1918.
