During the operations of October 7, 1916, when the 13th and 16th Canadian Battalions were attacking the Regina Trench, north west of Courcelette an the 15th Canadian Battalion was in close support, Pte Shaw and six men volunteered to carry bombs to the 16th Canadians who were then established in the Regina Trench.  It was a most critical time as the 16th Canadians had exhausted their supply of bombs, and the enemy was bombing along their right flank of the Regina Trench toward their position. Pte Shaw left 15th Battn Hdqrs with these men each having collected from 20 to 30 bombs and proceeded overland to the 16th Battn’s position under most intense barrage of heavy machine gun and artillery fire, arriving with this supply of bombs and the 16th Battn were able to drive back the enemy who were then nearing their position.
