Pte Langridge, John Edgar

B135232 John Edgar Langridge was recruited through the depot run by the home battalion of the 48th Highlanders and wore the 48th uniform until he was assigned to a unit. He went overseas on 9 April 43. In the UK he was assigned to 5 CIRU (Canadian Infantry Reserve Unit) awaiting assignment to a battalion. He was assigned to No. 2 CBRD on 5 Nov 1943 to sail to Italy and joined the Royal Canadian Regiment of the 1st Brigade on 29 December 43.

Pte Langridge was killed in action when the building he was in was struck by artillery fire and fell on him – 1 Jan 44, just two days after joining the RCR. This was during the time that the 1st Brigade (which included the 48th, RCR and Hastings) was chasing the Germans after the Germans abandoned Ortona.
