Private Simeon Gregoire was a 35 year old miner from Thetford Mines, Quebec with six years pre-war Militia service in the 54th Regiment (Carabiners de Sherbrooke) when he attested into the 12th Battalion at Valcartier in September 1914. He was sent to the 15th Battalion in early May 1915 as a reinforcement following 2nd Ypres and assigned to No. 3 Company. Private Gregoire fought at Festubert in late May and served in the 1915 trench tours – Givenchy in June, Ploegsteert in July & August, Hill 63 in August and the long September-December tour on The Messines Road. In January-February 1916 the battalion was in trenches 138-142 back on The Messines Road and on February 3rd Private Gregoire became ill and was medically evacuated to the Divisional Rest Station. He was sent to the 3rd Canadian General Hospital, Camiers and from there to the UK where he was attach posted to the 7th and 43rd Reserve Battalions during which time he was being treated for endocarditis at Norwich War Hospital and later at the Military Hospital Shorncliffe where he died on February 11, 1916. Private Gregoire is buried in Shorncliffe Military Cemetery.
