Pte AGAR, George

204089 Private George Agar was 20 year old farmer originally from Goderich, Ontario and living in Cheviot, Saskatchewan when he attested into the 96th Battalion in December 1915 at Saskatoon. In the UK he was transferred to the 92nd Battalion in October 1916 and then to the 5th Reserve Battalion at Bramshott in January 1917. In April 1917 he was sent in a reinforcement draft to the 15th Battalion following Vimy. Private Agar was assigned to No. 4 Company and served in the Arleaux, Mericourt and Loos trench tours.

During the period July 20-23, 1917 the 15th Battalion was in the line near Loos and throughout that four day trench tour their positions were heavily bombarded by German 77mm artillery and especially ‘Whiz-bangs’ – minenwerfers.  On July 20th Private Agar suffered penetrating shrapnel wounds to his chest and both legs and was evacuated to No. 58 Casualty Clearing Station I Rouen where he died on July 24th. Private Agar is buried in Lillers Communal  Cemetery.
