Lt Col Gerald (“Gerry”) Morphy Malone, MC VD

Commanding Officer 2nd Battalion 48th Highlanders of Canada 1940-1943

Lieutenant Colonel Gerald Morphy Malone, MC, ED, was born 10 February 1891. He attended St Andrew’s College.

He married Isabel Sanderson Levan, and together they had at least two daughters.

He was a lawyer and also serving in the 48th Highlanders when he attested into the 134th Battalion with the rank of Lieutenant on 20 Feb 1916. He served in the UK with the 134th Battalion and later with the 12th Reserve Battalion until March 1918 when he was posted to the 15th Battalion in France. He served with the 15th Battalion for the duration of the war and was awarded the Military Cross in 1919.

Following the war, he remained in the 48th Highlanders and served as Commanding Officer of the Home Battalion from 1940 to 1943. He died in December 9, 1967 and is buried in St, James Cemetery, Toronto.

He was a brother of Lt Maurice Edward ‘Mike’ Malone who was KIA at Observatory ridge on 3 Jun 1916 while serving with the 15th Battalion.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.
During an attack this officer, who was acting as intelligence officer, went forward to establish a report centre with the attacking companies. He had to traverse a valley under heavy shell fire, but succeeded in establishing a visual signal post,
and sent back messages as soon as the attacking waves got up. The following day be was indefatigable in procuring information about the flanks, though he was constantly exposed to machine-gun fire.
