Lt. H. Edward (Ted) Cameron with the 2nd Battalion

Captain H. E. (Ted) Cameron

Ted Cameron, a former Telegram reporter joined the 48th Highlanders (militia) then volunteered for the 2nd Battalion, 48th Highlanders in 1939 after war had been declared in September. Following training Cameron went overseas to join the 1st Battalion in England. On 28 April 1943, and now a Captain, he was appointed officer commanding 5 Platoon (Anti-tank) as the battalion prepared to sail for Sicily. After the landing at Pachino on 9 July, his anti-tank weapons and vehicles finally arrived at Giarratano as the battalion prepared to move on the first advance to drive the Germans out of Sicily. Cameron saw his vehicles and guns being used as taxis as the battalion was short of vehicles, many of which had been on a ship sunk in the Mediterranean. On 10 August, with the Sicilian campaign over and the battalion at rest at Militello,  Cameron acted as host to three reporters from the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and the Telegram. Cameron was one of many sent to hospital with malaria contracted in Sicily and returned to the battalion at Campobasso on 20 September 1943 in time for the advance from Campobasso to the Moro River. At some date later (tbd) Captain Cameron was transferred.

On 29 September 1945, Captain Cameron, now back in Toronto, arrived in Halifax to greet the return of his regiment the 48th Highlanders and travelled with them to Toronto for the final dismissal on 1 October 1945.
