Lieut D.H Milnes (nicknamed “Pocohantas) joined the 2nd Battalion, 48th Highlanders in Toronto and is shown in a 1940 newspaper article as one of the 52 officers of the 2nd Battalion who were training for service in the Second World War. Following training Milne went overseas to the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders of Canada, assigned to A Company, then to Support Coy as Platoon commander of the Pioneers platoon when Support Company was formed for the first time on Oct 11, 1942. When the battalion sailed for Sicily in June 1943 he became 2 i/c of the Anti tank platoon. He was wounded on 18 December 1943 in Operation Morning Glory when the battalion successfully advanced beyond The Gully on the approaches to Ortona.
