On 26 Dec 43 “A” Coy the 48th Highlanders of Canada was in position at MR 308166 West of ORTONA. Within a space of a few hours it was heavily attacked three times by a Bn of German paratroops. During one of these attacks when. his platoon was pinned down by machine gun fire from two directions, Pte crane and one companion worked their way well forward of the platoon position with a light machine gun, opened fire and drew the enemy fire upon themselves.  This enabled the Pl to occupy better fire positions, from which they silenced one machine  gun.  The other enemy machine gun, however continued to fire and inflicted heavy casualties.  At this point the light machine unjammed.  Pte Crane without a thought for his own safety, jumped out of cover and charged the enemy machine gun post and gilled the two germans manning it with his bayonet.

By this most gallant action, in which he showed superb courage, dash and determination, Pte Crane saved many casualties and enabled the Pl to perform its task. As consequence the 48th Highlanders of Canada were able to maintain their positions threatening the enemy’s line of withdrawal from ORTONA.
