Sterling silver 92nd Bn Buckle Badge – Col J. F. Lash, OBE (MID*)

Sterling silver buckle badge of 92nd Battalion (48th Highlanders). Made by Ellis Bros. of Toronto for Major John Francis Lash. On the rear of the badge, at the bottom, are the words “Sterling 925, Ellis Bros.” with sterling marks.

John Francis Lash, a barrister in Toronto,  was 10 months with the 48th Highlanders Militia battalion beginning as a Provisional Lieutenant in the 48th Highlanders as recorded in G.O. 15 on 10 September 1914. His certificate as Lieutenant, number 28671, was recorded in M. O. 41/15.  He was made Captain, Certificate number 33656 in M. O. 415 and Field Officer in Certificate number 35697 in M.O. 506/15.  He enlisted on 28 August 1915 with the 92nd Battalion (48th Highlanders) for overseas duty, embarking for England with the 92nd Battalion from Halifax N.S. as Junior Major in Headquarters of the battalion on the SS Empress of Britain on 20 May 1916.

Major Lash was made Deputy Judge Advocate General spending time in France and Flanders as Gen. List Cdn Representative and at HQ Staff CEFS. On 07 Sept. 1918 he was assigned as Canadian Representative, Cdn Siberian Force in Vladivostok, Russia as Colonel. Colonel Lash was twice Mentioned in Dispatches (24 Feb 1918 and 07 Oct 1918) and made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) on 18 Nov 1918 for his service in France and Flanders.
