Johnston was Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders of Canada from 1942 – 1944, including the landing at Pachino in Sicily on 13 June 1943 and Italy including the breaching of the Hitler Line, south of Rome in May, 1944 for which he was promoted.
