Side Drum – 48th Highlander Cadets

Side Drum made by the Premier drum company from 1965 to 1987 and is a rod tension drum. The model is either the Royal Scot or the Super Royal Scot. These rod drums were streamlined in appearance when compared with rope drums. The “rods” made execution of beatings much easier for drummers and the maintenance is minimal. The 48th Highlanders crest and battle honours have been installed by a “decal”.

This model of drum was carried by both the Pipes and Drums and the Military band of the 48th Highlanders during the late 70s and early 80s and was used by the Pipes and Drums in 1981 at Wembley Stadium. Drums for the Pipes and Drums were purchased by the Regimental Trusts for the volunteer drummers that expanded the P&D or for the volunteer Military band. Those issued by DND to Drummers of the active battalion would have been returned when a new pattern was to be used. This drum was one of those subsequently donated to the 48th Highlanders Cadets  who had formed a Pipe Band in the late 1970s.
