Major W.H. Orchard joined the British Army as a Private in the 2nd Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment in 1866. He served with the Prince of Wales Dragoon Guards, Montreal Engineers, 16th Battalion and 4th Cavalry (Kingston). In 1892 towards the end of his military Career he joined the 48th Highlanders. By 1898 Major Orchard retired but continued to serve as Quartermaster and devoting his attention to the shooting practice of the Regiment.
